Wireless Camera Systems FAQ

What is a wireless camera?
A wireless camera has a built-in transmitter that sends video signals to a receiver that can be connected to a TV, VCR or other equipment. No wires are necessary between the camera/transmitter and the receiver.

What is included in a wireless camera system?
Our standard system with 700' LOS (line of site) range includes a variety of features:
  • Your choice of high-resolution black & white or color camera with built-in 4-channel 2.4 GHz transmitter
  • 4-channel 2.4 GHz stereo receiver with 3db omni-directional antenna (2) 12vdc power supplies
  • 6' video cable with RCA connectors
  • 1-year parts and labor warranty

How do wireless cameras record?
In a wireless system, the camera/transmitter sends the signal to the receiver. The signal penetrates walls and other objects before the receiver captures it and connects to a VCR for recording. You can use any VCR for recording and can record up to 8 hours of video on a normal tape.

How far can video be transmitted?
The ranges given in our specifications are rated LOS (line of site), which refers to the distance between the transmitter and receiver with no obstructions between them. The standard system offers 700 feet LOS, while other systems can reach as far as 10 miles LOS.

What is the penetration ability of the signal through walls/ceilings/objects?
Our standard 700 feet LOS (line of site) system can typically penetrate 6-8 interior walls with ranges up to 400 feet and is designed to work comfortably in a 5500 square foot home or office. The signal penetrates most solid objects, including glass, plastic, wood, fiberglass and some metals. The denser a material, the more the signal is weakened.

How do I get the best range when using wireless video?
Place the camera/transmitter where there are the fewest obstructions between it and the receiver.
  • Place the receiver higher than the camera/transmitter.
  • Try making adjustments to the locations of the camera/transmitter and receiver. Moving the location in any direction by only a few feet will often improve the reception.

How many wireless cameras can be used at the same time?
All of our systems are capable of operating up to 4 cameras simultaneously on different channels.

Can wireless cameras be used with wired cameras?
Yes. You can use wireless cameras in any security system that uses wired cameras. For example, you could use 12 wired and 4 wireless cameras together and record them all on a single VCR with a 16-channel quad splitter.

Can a wired camera be converted to a wireless system?
Yes. We offer separate transmitters and receivers that are designed to connect easily to any video camera so you can get rid of the wires in your current system.

Can a system run on battery power?
Yes. We offer 2 different sizes of rechargeable battery packs and chargers that can power our wireless cameras. They supply power to a typical wireless camera for 4-8 hours before they need recharging.

What other equipment do I need?
Our wireless video camera systems come complete with everything you need to send and receive the video signal. To view the live signal, just hook the receiver to any TV. To record the live signal, connect the receiver to a VCR.

What other equipment can I use?
Our wireless camera systems are compatible with most TVs and VCRs. Or, connect them to time lapse VCRs that can record for days, weeks or even a whole month on a single tape, or to security grade monitors that are capable of displaying the high resolution images the cameras deliver.
The standard RCA video outputs let you connect the system to a host of other equipment to enhance your system's performance:
  • Quad splitters
  • Video motion detectors
  • PVPON live Internet video system
  • Computers with video inputs
